Nearly 500,000 customers of Pacific Gas & Electric (PG & E) in northern California were in the dark starting at midnight Wednesday, as the company began to turn off the electricity in an effort to help prevent the start wildfire.

Another 300,000 will lose power at a later date, for a total of 800,000 customers affected by the closing, Sumeet Singh, vice president of Public Safety Program Wildfire company said.

Forecasters warned that many parts of Northern California is under extreme fire danger weather with windy and dry conditions forecast for the region.

"We apply this strength of public safety cover as a last resort," Singh said at a news conference on Tuesday. It could take several days to restore power, Singh added, as the company will first conduct a safety inspection after widespread wind event ends.

PG & E has come under fire for his role in a series of catastrophic fires across the state. The Company had previously said it was "probable" that the equipment that began in 2018 Camp Fire - and most damaging fire deadly countries - when the power cord touch a tree nearby.

An investigation by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection found the company responsible for the fires, which killed 85 people and destroyed thousands of buildings.

Who will be affected

power was scheduled to be shut off gradually, PG & E said in a statement Tuesday, "depending on the local time of the adverse weather conditions, starting with the district in the northern part of the country."

On Monday, Mayor of San Jose Sam Liccardo urged residents to prepare to be without power for seven days.
